This website inspired our anchoring activity. This website is a great resource for analyzing the specific phenomenon for how Darlene Etienne survived for 15 days in earthquake rubble. A YouTube video shows Darlene Etienne being rescued from the earthquake rubble. This video will be shown during the introduction of this unit.
Teaching Methods
When lesson planning, I will try to adhere to the backwards design protocol. I have found that this approach helps me to plan with specific goals and standards in mind so that each and everyday is filled with productive learning and growing in the study of biology. One type of teaching method I want to include and be the center of my teaching style is project based learning. Students are able to discuss, think, read and write when engaging in meaningful projects and I hope that I can provide this type of wholistic approach in my classroom.
Asking the right questions are key in helping students make sense of what they know and be able to verbalize or communicate what they know in a meaningful way. The rightquestion.org is incredibly helpful in fulfilling this herculean task.
Labs and Experiments
There are many resources a teacher can tap into for help, ideas, and lesson plans. A Next Generations Science Standards Website has a few sample labs a teacher could use for ideas to get started. The following is a list of other websites for my inspiration.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Harvard University
